Managing surface/storm water

A water authority uses the H2gO telemetry and process information system for the monitoring of pump stations and weirs. Multiple types of measurements are collected in H2gO by connecting to either pumps (for power usage and flow rate data) or data loggers (for overflow registration and water quality parameters).

A major requirement when implementing H2gO was the ability to connect to existing information systems like a GIS, a water management system and a flood forecasting system.

With H2gO data can be captured for a longer period of time; in this specific case a total of 200 million records need to be stored and this number is growing as more data from locations like overflows are added to H2gO.

Hydrology engineers are able to access this data through H2gO and use this for modelling and forecasting.

I-Real has also implemented the H2gO PDA application and added the overflows to the monitoring network.

Sewerage management

For numerous councils H2gO manages the sewerage infrastructure. Overflows, pump stations, detention and settlings tanks etc. are connected to H2gO; this way data from one site can be used to automatically control another site.

For example; if the wastewater level in detention tank X is critically high, there are 2 options:

  1. H2gO sends an alert to the group or person on duty (based on shift schedules stored in H2gO's Alarm Management module) or

  2. H2gO can stop (one of) the pumps of pump station Y. These types of procedures can be predefined in H2gO's Real-time Control module.

Another important part of this project was the registration of wastewater overflows. These overflows have the potential to cause harm to public health and the environment and cause grave economic impact on the industry.

H2gO's alarming and notification ensures that key personnel and authorities are informed as soon as possible.

At each overflow a pressure meter and a RealSense 10 data logger have been installed. The logger collates the data and periodically sends a text message with this data to the H2gO system. This is a perfect solution for standalone sites without mains supply.
